Instructions for Operating
Sharp Ceiling-Mounted Data/Video Projectors

General Instructions
  1. Locate the wall-mounted computer/video input box. (Usually on one side of the chalkboard.)
  2. Locate the projector remote control button pad. (Usually next to the computer/video input box.)
  3. Attach video source or computer to the appropriate input.
    For a Videocassette Recorder (VCR):
    • Hook up the RCA patch cord to correct connections (video/audio out on VCR to video/audio in on connection box). (You should bring your own patch cord since one is not provided in the classroom.)
    For a Computer:
    • For a Windows computer, hook up the SVGA cable to the computer.
    • For a Macintosh computer, hook up the SVGA cable and Macintosh adaptor to the Macintosh computer.
    • If sound is desired, locate the 1/8" jack that is beneath the SVGA cable connection in the wall-mounted input box. Using your own audio cable, connect your computer to the jack. (You should bring your own audio cable since one is not provided in the classroom.)
    • If network access is desired, an Ethernet port is usually located near the chalkboard. (You should bring your own ethernet cable since one is not provided in the classroom.)

      NOTE: In rooms like 18 Tucker Hall, the permanently installed Macintosh must be turned off before a laptop is connected and booted up. In other rooms with installed computers there is a desktop or wall-mounted "data switch" allowing you to select either laptop or desktop computer.
  4. Boot up the computer or turn on the VCR and insert tape/depress the play button on the VCR
  5. Turn the projector on by pushing the ON button located on the projector remote control pad.
  6. Wait briefly for the projector to go through its warm up phase. (About 20 to 30 seconds; watch for light to come out of the lens.)
  7. If your device is projecting onto the screen, you're done. Proceed to step 8 below.
    • Push the VIDEO input button if you are using a videocassette recorder (VCR) with the projector.
    • Push the DATA input button if you are using a laptop computer with the projector.
  8. Use the VOL UP/DOWN buttons to control the audio level (if audio is used).
  9. If there is a button on the control pad marked with an asterisk (*), you can push the button if you want the screen to project nothing for a short period of time; push the button again to continue projecting an image. (In some rooms, this button is labeled BLACK SCREEN.)
  10. Turn projector off when you are finished
    by pushing the OFF button.

Note: There should be a nine-foot cable attached to the wall plate for use with the computer. An adaptor is attached to the nine-foot cable with a short chain for use with a Macintosh computer. If this cable or adaptor is missing please call 882-6703 and report the problem.

Note: Some Macintosh PowerBooks require an adaptor (Part #590-0831-A) in order for them to connect to the 15-pin Macintosh adaptor (attached on a short chain to the nine-foot cable). These are available from Macintosh dealers or from TigerTech in Brady Commons.

Note: Macintosh PowerBooks require that the "Mirroring effect" is turned on in order for it to output a signal from its adaptor RGB port. IBM laptops usually utilize an F7 function to output a signal from their RGB port. (Consult our computer user's guide for specific information on your computer.)

If you have any questions, contact the Academic Support Center (882-6703). An ASC staff member can meet with you in advance of your classes to demonstrate operations and answer questions concerning your specific needs. (The room is checked weekly for proper operation, but if you notice a problem, contact ASC's Classroom Technology Services' staff at 882-6703.)
